Reactions live on the meals below
For ten days there was a fine wire a few millimetres into my arm. It was
coated in an enzyme that reacts with glucose, and the reaction makes a small electric current.
That current is what the sensor actually measures. Every number on this page
started out as electricity and was converted into millimoles.
The wire sat in the fluid between my cells rather than in a vein, so glucose
had to seep out of the capillaries before it gets there. Five or six minutes,
at rest
(measured ).
Longer while it is climbing. Longer again as the fortnight wears on and scar
tissue builds up around the wire, which
turns out to matter more than the seeping does .
Which means the fluid is the whole game — and you can
squeeze it out. Roll onto that arm in your sleep and the pressure pushes fluid
away from the wire, which then reports a collapse it invented. A
compression low .
You can spot one without knowing any of that: it falls faster than a body
can, holds exactly one number for ten minutes, and snaps back to where it
started the moment the weight lifts. Blood sugar does none of those three.
I marked those stretches by hand; they stay on the curve, drawn dashed, and
the averages leave them out and say so.
Then a minute of plumbing: sensor to phone, phone to Abbott, Abbott to here.
So the shape is real and the timing is approximate. Every peak here happened
slightly earlier, and slightly higher, than it looks.
The sensor came out on the evening of Wednesday 9 September, fourteen days
after it went in. Nothing here has been edited since, and nothing will be:
every reading the sensor sent is on this page, in the order it arrived.
Every clock on it is Swedish time, wherever you are reading this —
they are my days, so they start and end where I did.
Not medical advice, not a medical device, and emphatically not your data.
You can take a copy of it though — every
reading and every meal photograph, as files.
